Five-Quart Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "GATE CITY WATER COOLER / Patented May 25th, 1886.," New York State origin, late 19th century, cylindrical cooler with heavily-tooled base, rounded shoulder, tall flaring collar, and bunghole with metal spigot at base. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Southeastern Virginia collection amassed decades ago. A 2 1/4" hairline from rim on revese. A short, faint surface line to collar on front. Some staining. A large chip on interior of rim and other chips to inner rim, where a lid would rest.
