Two Salt-Glazed New Jersey Stoneware Tobacco Jars, Stamped "APPLEBY & HELME. 133 WATER ST. E. COR. PINE," Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1870, both of approximate one-gallon size and squat-shaped form with thin rims, both bearing advertising for the tobacco firm of George W. Helme and brother-in-law, Jacob Appleby of Helmetta, NJ. One jar has an error mark, reading "APPELBY" instead of "APPLEBY". One with filled chipping to rim, a faint 1 1/4" X-shaped line on front, and some brown flecks to side. The other in excellent condition with marker notation on underside.
