Rare Cobalt-Decorated New Bern, North Carolina Stoneware Advertising Jug, attributed to Peter Herrmann, Baltimore, MD, circa 1880, cylindrical half-gallon jug with tooled spout, featuring the impressed advertising "FROM J E AMGETT / WHOLESALE & RETAIL / DEALER IN MERCHANDISE / NEW BERN NC". Baltimore advertising jugs made for the North Carolina market are considered very unusual. The use of heavy cobalt brushwork over the impressed advertising is extremely rare for Baltimore jugs of this type. Missing handle. Sealed spider crack on reverse, continuing onto underside and several inches up front of jug. Some traces of old silver paint.
