Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.B. PFALTZGRAFF & CO. / YORK, PA," circa 1855-1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with heavily-shaded body and long tail, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Any bird decorations produced by a member of the Pfaltzgraff family are considered quite unusual. A 6 3/4" crack from rim. A thin 7 1/2" crack from rim on left side of crock's front. A 3" surface line on right side of crock's front, not visible on interior. A thin 7 1/2" crack from rim on side of crock. A 4" hairline from rim on reverse. Two nicks to one handle. A few rim chips. Spidering surface lines on underside, not visible on interior.
