Albany-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Spaniel, Inscribed "Tom Reid," probably Texas or Ohio origin, circa 1860-1890, molded figure of a seated spaniel on an octagonal base, the surface covered in a chocolate brown Albany slip glaze. Incised details to dog's face and paws. Underside incised in script "Tom Reid". Discovered in Texas, this spaniel is possibly the work of a relative of Limestone County, TX potter J.P. Reid, who worked there circa 1880. Alternatively, the name could be a reference to Tuscawaras County, Ohio potter, Thomas Reed, although the last name is spelled differently. Heavy chipping to base on reverse. Minor chipping elsewhere on base. Areas on surface of Albany slip glaze, which crawled away from the stoneware body during the firing, leaving whitish clay spots. H 9 1/2".
