Rare Two-Gallon Early Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swan Decoration, Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1815-1825, vasiform jar with applied lug handles, decorated on one side with a brushed design of a swimming swan and on the reverse with abstract brushwork. Brushed highlights to handle terminals. While the maker and origin of this jar is unknown, the form and handle construction may be inspired by Paul Cushman pieces from Albany, NY. Brushed figural designs from this period in American stoneware production are considered very rare. Interesting potter's hand print near base. 1 3/8" reglued sliver at rim. Small chips on interior of rim. Some small flakes to surface. Chip to underside at edge. Short line on underside, continuing 2" up base. A few other very short, minor lines to foot.
