Rare Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Civil War Date, attributed to Thomas Owensby, Union District, SC, ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim and applied tab handles, the surface covered in a visually-appealing, greenish alkaline glaze. Shoulder incised with a partial "1862" Civil War date, reading "862" or possibly "863". The first numeral of the date may have been wiped away when the potter applied the left handle or glaze to the jar. Jar includes a letter of authenticity by Stephen Ferrell of Terry Ferrell's Antiques, Edgefield, SC. Chipping around much of base. Shallow chips and wear to handles. Small chips to rim.
