Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid churn with lug handles, decorated with a large brushed and slip-trailed design of a bird with spotted wing, fan-shaped tail, and heavily-shaded body, perched atop a stylized branch. Maker's mark and capacity mark highlighted in cobalt. A 16" partially-painted crack to right of bird. A 2" hairline from rim on front. A filled and colored rim chip. Some dryness to cobalt. One handle chip. Faint 3" X-shaped line on side of churn, not visible on interior. 1/2" surface line to rim on side of churn. Some light exfoliation to base on reverse. An approximately 4 1/2" tight spider line under one handle, emanating from a small stone ping. A few faint surface lines on reverse. A chip and some nicks on inner rim where a lid would rest.
