Rare Glazed Redware Cup, Stamped "BACKER," Anthony Weis Bacher, Winchester, VA, circa 1865-1882, with footed base, semi-ovoid body, tooled midsectiona, and applied strap handle with distinctive triangular terminal. Lead-glazed surface decorated with streaks of cream-colored slip and manganese. Impressed on underside in a scarce small-sized font, "Backer," listed by H.E. Comstock in The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley region as Bacher's second Winchester maker's mark, used 1865-1882. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a Texas collection consigned to this auction. Large restoration to rim area. Rim with two additional chips and wear. Restoration to 1 3/4" and 1 1/2" flakes to body. Glazed-over line in base of handle. H 3 1/2".
