Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Heart Decoration, Dated 1858, probably Midwestern origin, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a heart encompassing the date "1859," surrounded by dots. Reverse decorated with the date "1859," underscored by a flourish. 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" reglued piece from rim with related top-to-bottom crack. 2 1/2" vertical hairline at base on front, continuing 1 3/4" onto underside. A second 1" line at base on reverse, continuing 1 1/2" onto underside. A small base chip and two smaller base nicks. Small chip to one handle.
