Very Rare One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar, Stamped "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE," Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1805, ovoid stoneware jar with rounded foot, tooled shoulder, and applied vertical loop handles, the front and back decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape and tassel design. Midsection impressed with the cobalt-highlighted stamp "COMMERAWS" on one side, and on the reverse with "STONEWARE". Featuring a highly-prized, early style form with vertical handles, this jar is a rare transitional piece, made shortly after Commeraw began using his well-known impressed drape and tassel decoration. It is the only example we have offered in a vertical-handled form featuring this popular impressed motif. Sealed crack on one side, extending onto underside where it becomes thinner and fainter, ultimately becoming a faint hairline, which extends several inches up the opposite side of the jar. Otherwise excellent condition. H 9 1/2".
