Extremely Rare Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Depiction of a Hatted Gentleman Flanked by Elaborate Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1825, one-and-a-half-gallon, ovoid jar with squared rim, footed base, and arched tab handles, decorated with folky brushed cobalt design of a hatted man with outstretched arms and heavily-shaded coat, standing atop a hill. Light cobalt brushwork in front of the figure's hands suggest he may be releasing a bird. This decoration is flanked by elaborate vertical tulip decorations on the sides and reverse of the jar. Human decorations on Baltimore stoneware are exceedingly rare, with less than ten examples recorded by any maker. This jar is one of a few examples by this same maker bearing a figural design flanked by vertical tulips. An exceptional folk art rendering on American stoneware. Excellent condition with a chip to one handle and a very minor nick to bottom edge of rim.
