Two Pieces of Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware, Northeastern U.S. origin, mid 19th century, a three or four gallon, New Jersey jar with unusual squat form, decorated with the cobalt date "1850" on one side and floral design on reverse, attributed to Nicholas Van Wickle; paired with a one-gallon cake crock, inscribed on both sides "one" in cobalt, surrounded by various flourishes. Cake crock includes a salt-glazed lid with Albany slip top, not original to crock. Jar dated 1850 with significant flaws, including large cracks emanating from underside onto body of jar, cracks from rim, two stone pings, and some flaking to area of date. Cake crock with 4" crack from rim, 2 3/4" hairline from rim, and 4 1/2" horizontal Y-shaped hairline at base. Lid with large chips and a significant Y-shaped crack.
