Very Rare Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Compass Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE," Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1805, small-sized ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and vertical loop handles. Front and back with incised semi-circular decoration created with a compass and highlighted in cobalt. Highly unusual decoration and vertical-handled form. An excellent, early example of African-American potter Thomas Commeraw's work. Provenance: Sanford Smith, New York, New York. Excellent condition with a small chip to side of one handle, and an in-the-firing stone ping to rim. H 7 3/4".
