Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J.M. HICKERSON / STRASBURG, VA," circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborately-brushed swag and floral design on one side, the reverse with a large horizontal floral motif. An unusually-large and well-decorated example of Hickerson stoneware. Provenance: Recently found in a closet in the Shenandoah Valley. Crock is out-of-round with some sunken areas. Some burns to surface. Rim chips. A few small chips to one handle.
