Extremely Rare Monumental Salt-Glazed Stoneware Memorial Urn, Dated 1886, attributed to Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, large-sized, flared urn with dramatic rounded rim, which curves down over the shoulder of the vessel. Front decorated with an applied clay scroll, featuring the incised and cobalt-highlighted inscription "Allen Hucklebery / Died May 30 1886 / Age 26 years 7 months 2 days". Allen Hucklebery appears in the 1880 census as a 21-year-old book seller living in Mound City, Illinois. Several groups of finger marks are visible on the underside of the rim, impressed when the potter removed the large vessel from the wheel. An extremely rare form in American stoneware. Two chips to bottom edge of rim. A few minor, expected base chips. H 14 3/4" ; D (across top) 19".
