Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Game Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. MANTELL / PENN YAN," NY State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a finely-slip-trailed design of a game bird with turned head and raised leg, perched atop a plant. Excellent detail to bird, including a spotted breast, striped neck, and cobalt-accented tail. Given the bird's similarity to examples by the Burger family, this crock was likely decorated by a previous employee of the Burger pottery in Rochester. Excellent, as-made condition with some small stone pings.
