Exceptional Six-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Apple Decoration, Ohio origin, third quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with rounded rim and two applied strap handles, decorated with an exuberant brushed cobalt design of two very large apples flanking the number 6, underscored by dashes. Excellent form with two of the largest apples we have seen on a piece of Ohio stoneware. Professional restoration to one handle, top-to-bottom crack to left of decoration, and underside. In-the-firing 1 1/2" base chip on reverse, along with a smaller chip. Two small hairlines at base.
