Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Hidden Face Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with squared rim and applied tab handles, decorated on one side with an elaborate brushed design of leafy stems and dotted trails of flowers or berries. Peering from between the stems is the highly unusual design of a human face, with eyes, eyebrows, and nose visible. Reverse features a similar motif with tulip at the center instead of the face. A well-decorated example of Baltimore stoneware with an unusual figural subject. Excellent condition with three rim chips and a 1 1/2" in-the-firing chip at base. H 13 1/2".
