Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Eastern Shore of Maryland Advertising, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1875, low-walled, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, featuring the impressed and cobalt-highlighted advertising, "HALL & GODWIN / DEALERS IN DRYGOODS / GROCERIES & QUEENS WARE / CENTREVILLE M,D". Crock decorated on the front and back with a wavy line and clover motif. Impressed with an unusual Celtic cross under one handle. Eastern Shore of Maryland advertising stoneware is scarce in its own right,. This example is the first Eastern Shore cake crock we have seen. Excellent condition with a 1 1/4" in-the-firing separation at base, which is not visible on interior, and some small, shallow chips to rim. H 5" ; Diameter 9 1/2".
