Very Rare Yale University Stoneware Tobacco Jar with Lid, Dated '96, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and rounded rim, decorated with an incised pipe, the name "Yale," and the date "'96." Remainder of jar with incised decoration of a figure holding a football, the bust of a woman, and the slogan "Qui vive sans / tabae ne doit / pas vivre / du tout." Underside incised "VENNUM." Original stoneware lid incised "Yale '96 / T.G. VENNUM / Y 96." Surface covered in a brownish Albany slip glaze. An exceptional example of Yale stoneware. Jar with glazed-over rim chip and faint 1" line in rim. Lid with small chip to knob and edge on underside, as well as a small contact mark on underside. H (including lid) 6 3/4".
