Unusual Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to J.P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1830, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flaring rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on both sides with a stylized flower extending from a stem with leaves, the blossom with a brushed "4" at its center. Rare decoration for Schermerhorn stoneware. Small glazed-over rim chip. Whitish residue to some of surface, probably water glass. 1 1/4" in-the-firing chip near base. Some minor glazed-over chipping at base. H 15".
