Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Chestertown, MD Advertising, Stamped "P. HERRMANN," Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with semi-squared rim and applied lug handles, impressed with the cobalt-highlighted merchant's advertising "FROM T W ELIASON JR / DEALER IN DRY GOODS / GROCERIES & C / CHESTERTOWN MD." Reverse decorated in brushed cobalt with a large two-stemmed clover plant. Highly unusual size. A very fine example of Eastern Shore of Maryland advertising stoneware. 3 1/2" in-the-making separation on interior of rim on reverse, approximately 1" of which is visible as a thin line on exterior rim area. 2" in-the-making separation only visible on interior of crock. 3 1/2" and 2" hairlines from rim on reverse. Crack across underside with some lines extending from it and onto base area of crock. Long vertical hairline on interior, not visible on exterior. 6 1/2" thin crack from rim extending around one handle. This same crack forms a large Y only visible on the crock's interior. 2 1/4" shallow chip on underside. Handle chip. H 14 1/4".
