Extremely Rare Redware Figure of a Dog Guarding a Child, Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, large-sized redware figure of a dog with jowled face, curled ears, and long tail, standing above a child. Dog features heavily-incised detail to face, incised ribs, and anatomically correct underside. An applied clay collar, incised to resemble rope, extends around the dog's neck. Hand-modeled child wears a bonnet and night gown and peers from between the dog's front legs. Figures are applied atop an oval base with incised border. Surface covered in clear lead glaze. Exceptional form and imposing size. Near mint condition with a tiny nick to collar, which may have occurred in the firing. H 4 1/8" ; Length 7".
