Rare and Very Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va," circa 1870, elegantly-potted pitcher with ovoid body and tall flaring collar accented with incised lines, decorated with a brushed cobalt swag and hanging flower design descending from an unusual tooled molding. Collar decorated with horizontal slashes below the rim, swags and dashes around its midsection, and dashes running vertically along the spout. Impressed with Solomon Bell maker's mark on right side of the pitcher's midsection. A particularly fine example of this form by one of the Shenandoah Valley's most celebrated potters. Restored base chips and spout chip. 5" hairline from rim. Small chip to base of handle. Dryness (?) to section of collar on reverse has been colored. Restored rim chip on reverse. H 11".
