Early Ovoid Stoneware Jug with Impressed Clamshell Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS," Thomas Commeraw, Corlears Hook, Manhattan, New York, circa 1810, ovoid jug with tooled foot, ribbed handle, and heavily-tooled neck, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-filled "clamshell" design above the maker's mark "COMMERAWS," which is also brushed over in cobalt. A desirable early Manhattan maker. Chipping to base, some of which occurred in the making and is glazed-over. A few tiny nicks to neck. In-the-firing brown spots on front and reverse. H 11 5/8".
