Rare Anna Pottery Stoneware Frog Mug, Incised "Decatur Quail / 1881" Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, Illinois, cylindrical mug with flared base, tooled rim, and applied strap handle, covered in an Albany slip glaze. Incised with the words "Decatur Quail / 1881." Interior decorated with a large molded frog with incised toes and mouth and impressed circular eyes. The frog assumes a dynamic pose, with front legs pressed against the interior wall of the mug, as if the creature is ready to leap right out, exemplifying the often whimsical and creative nature of much of the Kirkpatrick brothers' work. This stance is unusual among known Anna frog mugs. A fine example of a desirable Anna Pottery form. Provenance: Ex-collection Georgeanna Greer. Mint condition. H 2 3/4".
