Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Leaping Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1880, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with an artistically-rendered, slip-trailed cobalt design of a leaping deer. Deer is depicted with large antlers and is accented with numerous shaded lines and heavy cobalt spots on its back and haunches. A patch of earth with shrubs is slip-trailed below the deer. Cobalt is brushed over the maker's mark and a "5," indicating the gallon capacity of the churn, is slip-trailed below. A highly decorative example of New York State stoneware. Professional restoration to curving crack extending from rim on front. Restoration includes portions of the deer's face. Additional restoration to flaking on left side of jug, some of which is still visible on reverse and left side of churn's front. H 18".
