Sgraffito-Decorated Redware Plate with Flowering Urn Motif, Southeastern PA origin, early 19th century, with coggled edge, the interior coated in yellowish slip and sgraffito-decorated with a flowering plant featuring a large, central tulip, two pomegranates, and smaller, stylized blossoms, emanating from an open-handled urn. Four-pointed stars flank the tulip at the top of the plate and the base is accented with vine-like devices. The design includes copper slip decoration, including an unusual treatment of copper slip applied over the exposed orange clay areas within the tulips' petals, the centers of the pomegranates, and elsewhere. Of particular note are the finely slip-trailed spots within the leaves and urn. Interior surface coated in a clear lead glaze. An imaginatively decorated work featuring classic Pennsylvania German iconography. Provenance: The Estate of Robert A. Ellison, Jr.; a red-painted collection code of unknown origin on the underside of the plate reads "1973.62." Large sections of professional restoration to interior surface of rim area, some of which extends roughly 1" into plate's interior surface. These restored areas do not extend through to the underside. Some wear to interior center. A small flake below the proper left four-petaled flower near the 2 o'clock position. Small rim chips. Diam. 11 3/4".
