Outstanding Stoneware Sample Jug with Sponged and Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "MANUFACTURED BY / FULPER POTTERY CO., / FLEMINGTON, N.J.," circa 1900, cylindrical jug with squared spout, the surface covered in a Bristol slip-glaze with sponged cobalt decoration to the upper body and handle. Stamped below in black with the following advertising, names, and logos, showcasing a variety of the marks used at the pottery: "BEATRICE."; "FULPER GERM PROOF / COVER FILTER / FULPER POTTERY CO. / FLEMINGTON, / N.J. / EST. 1905."; "REGISTERED" within a star-decorated shield, flanked by a wreath; "CHARLES SOMMER / SPRINGFIELD AVE. / NEWARK, N.J. / BEST RUM PUNCH / $1.00" within a shield; "No. 3"; and "MANUFACTURED BY / FULPER POTTERY CO., / FLEMINGTON, N.J." Impressed "3" at shoulder. Jug additionally features a large brushed-cobalt floral design on its side. It is unclear whether this jug sat in the Fulper storefront as a "salesman's sample" to illustrate different marks and decorative treatments or if it was a test piece to study the proficiency of several new stamps made for the pottery. Either way, it is among the most unusual pieces from this pottery that we have ever offered, a tour-de-force of advertising stoneware with strong decorative appeal. Provenance: The Estate of Robert A. Ellison, Jr. Excellent condition with some staining and a few minor in-the-firing iron pings. Old corn cob in spout. H 16 1/4".
