Exceptional Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Manhattan, NY Advertising, New York origin, circa 1830, ovoid jug with tooled spout, featuring the impressed and cobalt-highlighted advertising, "GENUINE / DRUGS.MEDICINES / PAINT OILS GLAS[S] / PATENT MEDICINES / PERFUMES & C. / WHOLESALE & RETAIL BY / LAWRENCE.KEESE & CO / 121 MAIDEN LANE / NEW.YORK," above a brushed flower. Long-time merchants on historic Maiden Lane in lower Manhattan (named in Dutch days for the maidens who used an adjacent brook to wash clothes), this well-known firm operated for about 45 years, beginning in 1803. Featuring nine lines of advertising, this jug is among the most extensively stamped merchant jugs that we have ever offered. Very nice condition with staining to surface and minor base wear. H 13 1/2".
