Extremely Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Vase, attributed to Rich Williams, Gowensville Area, Greenville County, SC, late 19th or early 20th century, ovoid form with narrow, slightly-flared collar, and two angular open handles applied at the shoulder, the surface covered in a mottled, dark-olive alkaline glaze over dark-red clay. This work is firmly attributed to Upstate South Carolina and strongly attributed specifically to African-American potter, Rich Williams, based on the striking similarity of the glaze and clay to a number of signed canning jars by this potter that we have sold. The only example of this form from this region that we have seen. Very nice condition with one rim chip. H 8 1/4".
