Fine Twenty-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with an undulating vine bearing blossoms with striped details, underscored by alternating vining and wavy stripes. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder. Base with large freehand "20," underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A twenty-gallon jar by the same maker was sold in Crocker Farm, Inc.'s Summer 2024 auction, lot 48. A restored top-to-bottom crack on reverse, stopping at base. An unrestored section of the crack extends 4" along base of reverse. A raised bubble in clay at base on front and on reverse. Some light surface wear. H 24 1/2".
