Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to the Hinkle-Mort Pottery, Jefferson County, TN, circa 1850-1870, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and heavily-ribbed lug handles with depressed terminals, the surface dipped in a reddish-brown slip and covered in a salt glaze. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Literature: Illustrated in Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 93, fig. 97, and p. 206, fig. 97. Wahler states the following in this book: "Sherds from [the Hinkle-More site] site support attribution" (Wahler, p. 206). Provenance: Purchased in 2004 from Southern Folk Pottery Collectors Society Auction, Bennett, SC. A thin 4 3/4" crack from rim. H 13 5/8".
