Manganese-Glazed Redware Jug, attributed to the Hinkle-Mort Pottery, Jefferson County, TN, circa 1840-1860, ovoid jug with footed base, tooled shoulder, and tapered spout, its ribbed handle with distinctive double depression at the upper terminal and single depression at the lower terminal. Surface covered in a streaky brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Provenance: Wahler states in her notes, "John Case found this in the attic of the Rogersville home with frames piled on top of it. It had curly blond hair inside it." Two spout chips. A few minor handle chips. A minor in-the-firing fissure to upper handle terminal. A small in-the-firing ping to spout on front and a minor flake near shoulder on reverse. A 1" chip to foot and minor chip to underside. H 9 1/2".
