Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Canning Jar, attributed to the Mottern Pottery, Carter County, TN, circa 1870, narrow-bodied, semi-ovoid jar with flaring collar, decorated with a slip-trailed abstract floral or foliate motif flanked by wavy lines, applied against a yellowish ground with clear lead glaze. Small traces of remaining slip indicate the jar was originally decorated in pale copper. Losses to nearly all slip decoration. Old white paint fills a large portion of the slip design. Old white paint to rim and interior of collar. A small, faint T-shaped line at base. H 8 7/8".
