Rare Glazed Redware Canning Jar with Two-Color Slip Decoration, Dated 1870, attributed to the Mottern Pottery, Carter County, TN, 1870, narrow-bodied, semi-ovoid jar with flaring collar, decorated in slip-trailed manganese slip with the date, "1870," surrounded by stylized floral and foliate devices in light-orange slip, all applied against a dark-orange ground with clear lead glaze. The only example of Mottern pottery from Wahler's collection featuring two colors of slip in its decoration. A 2 1/2" hairline from rim on front. Wear to rim. Some wear to slip. Minor surface wear and minor wear to bottom edge of jar. H 9".
