Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with White-Slip Heart Decoration, attributed to the Mottern Pottery, Carter County, TN, circa 1880-1890, squat-shaped jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and rounded lug handles with depressed terminals, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a heart-shaped vine surrounding the number, "2.," emanating from a stylized urn. Salt-glazed surface. Highly unusual decoration and lesser-seen stoneware medium for this maker. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Provenance: Purchased from Mrs. Rowland's estate in Blountville, Sullivan County, TN. Rim is out-of-round. A 1 1/8" rim chip on reverse. An in-the-firing stone inclusion beside decoration. H 10 5/8".
