Rare Glazed Redware Canning Jar with Manganese-Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to the Mottern Pottery, Carter County, TN, circa 1870-1890, narrow-bodied, semi-ovoid jar with flaring collar, decorated in manganese slip with a slip-trailed design of a flower with scrolled leaves and pointed blossom composed of graduated horizontal strokes, applied against an olive ground with clear lead glaze. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Literature: Illustrated in Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 35, fig. 22., p. 44, pl. 2, and p. 191, fig. 22. Provenance: Found in Johnson City, Washington County, TN. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" area of in-the-firing residue at base. H 8 1/4".
