Rare Open-Handled Redware Jar with Elaborate Manganese Slash Decoration, attributed to the Cain Pottery, Sullivan County, TN, circa 1840-1880, ovoid jar with footed base, rounded rim, and open loop handles, decorated throughout the body and handles with brushed manganese-slip slashes under a clear lead glaze. Excellent form and decoration. Provenance: Wahler writes in her notes that this jar and another piece were "found right over the VA line in Bristol." Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. One handle is professionally restored. Some professional restoration to flaking at base. Surface wear. Wear to underside. Omissions in glaze, as-made. Glaze wear to interior. H 13".
