Rare Two-Gallon Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Stamped "W. GRINSTAFF 18" and "1874," Blount County, TN origin, circa 1870-1890, ovoid jug with finely-tooled spout and grooved strap handle, dipped in reddish-brown slip and covered in a salt glaze, creating a mottled green-to-brown color to the surface. Impressed at base "W. GRINSTAFF 18." Impressed at rim with raised-face date, "1874," beside a raised-face two-gallon capacity mark. Provenance: Ex-Dr. Jerry E. Waters. p. 29, fig. 13 and p. 189, fig. 13. Some scattered surface flakes to midsection of jug's proper left side. An in-the-firing spout chip. H 15 1/2".
