Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "SMITH, JR.," Samuel Smith Pottery, Knoxville, TN, circa 1820-1830, ovoid jar with applied lug handles and rounded rim with inner flange for lid, the surface dipped in a reddish-brown iron solution and covered in a salt glaze. Highly unusual glass runs to one side. Impressed with "SMITH, JR." maker's mark below one handle. Regarding the glass treatment, Wahler states the following in her notes: "Only documented instance of glass glaze on Smith pots. He advertised for broken glass in the The Knoxville Register in 1823." Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Excellent condition with wear to rim and inner rim for lid as well as a small in-the-firing ping and contact mark to one side. H 9 3//4".
