Fine Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Alkaline Glaze, possibly AL origin, third quarter 19th century, highly-ovoid jar with flaring collar and ribbed vertical-strap handles, decorated with profuse incised combing around the collar and upper body and a band of wavy incised combing below. Surface covered in an olive-green alkaline glaze with iron flecking. Exceptional form. A sealed spider crack in underside, part of which extends several inches up body of jar and two other parts that extend from underside as tight lines onto base area. Shallow chipping to one handle. H 11 1/2".
