Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Vessel Fragment, probably AL origin, third quarter 19th century, fragment of a wheel-thrown vessel with hand-modeled and applied clay face including eyes with carved lids and nostrils, ears, finely-sculpted nose, open mouth, and dimpled chin with cleft. Diagonally-incised sideburns on cheeks. Surface covered in a glossy, olive-green alkaline glaze. This fragment appears to be part of a relatively small vessel measuring less than a half-gallon, possibly a bank or flask. Face itself is undamaged with some light wear to tip of nose and damage visible on reverse where it once joined a vessel. L 6 3/4".
