Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Rutile Decoration, Catawba Valley, NC origin, third quarter 19th century, spherical jar with arched handles and flaring rim with squared mouth, the shoulder decorated with alternating straight and wavy line incising, the surface covered in an olive-colored alkaline glaze. Pieces of glass placed on top of the handles prior to the firing created long, melted runs with rutile edges on the vessel's left and right sides. Incised "4" at shoulder. Rim with wear and a few chips. Small chips to one handle. Larger chips to opposing handle. Three minor in-the-firing pings to one side. H 11 3/4".
