Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to John Whelchel, Gaffney, SC area, fourth quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim, flattened lug handles, and throw lines visible around the majority of the vessel, the surface covered in a mottled blackish and brown alkaline glaze. A long, sealed Y-shaped crack from rim, part of which descends to midsection below one handle. Opposing side with a thin 4" sealed crack from rim and a thin, approximately 5 1/2" sealed Y-shaped crack from rim. However, it does not appear that a wedge was broken out and reglued. A hairline across underside. A large chip to one handle. H 12 3/4".
