Fine Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron-Slip Floral Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC area, late 19th century, ovoid jar with flared rim and open strap handles, iron-slip-decorated with a stenciled design of a triple-blossomed daisy plant and a freehand "3." Some of the petals and leaves include hand-incised details. Surface covered in a streaky tan-to-cream alkaline-glazed ground. Wahler describes this jar in her notes with, "This is the second of my 2 Whelchel favorites." A thin 3" line on underside extending 2 3/4" up front of jar. A shallow 3/4" chip to interior of rim. Wear around inner rim for lid. A 1 1/2" chip to underside along bottom edge. H 13 1/2".
