Fine Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Incised "Lm," David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, highly-ovoid jug with flared base, tooled shoulder, and finely-potted spout, the surface covered in a glossy light-olive alkaline glaze with appealing brown mottling to the base area. Shoulder deeply-incised with the initials, "Lm," along with a horseshoe (one of Drake's hallmarks), and two punctates, denoting two gallons. Provenance: Purchased from Roy Zito. A thin sealed crack across underside, extending 10 1/4" up proper right side of jug. A shallow 3/4" flake to top of spout. Two shallow base chips. H 13".
