Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Face Gate Post Ornament, Midwestern or Southern origin, late 19th or early 20th century, wheel-thrown sculpture in the form of a man's head with hat, hand-modeled facial features, and cigar. Hollow underside and interior allows the head to be placed for display on a gate post. Surface coated in a Bristol slip glaze with cobalt highlights. Extremely rare form with high folk art appeal. Significant losses to hat brim. A top-to-bottom Y-shaped line to hat. Loss to cigar. A chip and cracks in nose. Chips to proper right ear. A shallow chip and wear to proper left ear. One base chip. H 11 3/4" ; W (at brim of hat) 9".
