Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Honey Jar, Inscribed "John / D Elrod," Middle TN origin, second half 19th century, ovoid jar with narrow, semi-squared mouth, heavily-ribbed strap handle at shoulder, and horizontal pocket handle at base, incised in script across the shoulder with the name, "John / D Elrod." It is unknown whether this name refers to the vessel's owner or a potter, but John D. Elrod is probably the name of a man who appears in the 1880 federal census as a farmer in White County, and was a long-time resident of that county. Surface dipped in a reddish-brown slip and covered in a salt glaze. Significant pitting to surface. Otherwise excellent condition. H 16 3/4".
